Luxury brands going app-scale

While hardware releases continue to cause mass hysteria, Apple and other consumer electronics manufacturers know that it is increasingly what consumers download and put onto their smartphone or tablet computer that will be the money spinner in the future.

It is not just the money that has seen companies rush to release apps of their own. Apps have become the second face of many brands. In the fast-changing digital sphere, it is no longer enough to have a traditional website, Facebook page and Twitter feed. Luxury brands have begun to invest heavily in apps of their own.

With app sales expected to surpass USD8 billion by 2014, the number of luxury apps available will increase markedly to grab a slice of this lucrative pie. They’re the new digital shopfronts for luxury brands, which will need to invest in feature-rich, innovative or just plain kooky apps if they want to stand out.
