Located in Azabudai Hills, the new Hermès store spans two floors surrounded by an urban oasis of parklands, gardens, and city accommodations, according to a press release.

Designed by the Parisian architecture agency RDAI, the store combines nature with Japanese architectural, which blur the boundaries between interior and exterior living. Inside, panelled cherrywood walls feature alongside deep green tinted bamboo marquetry reminiscent of forests, as well the carpets in autumnal tones.

Outside, a semi-transparent glass façade is veiled in washi paper, hand-treated by artisans to create a flowing effect. The paper is backed by a layer of luminous panelling inspired by haku, a traditional gold-leaf technique, which sees the store glow like a garden lantern by night.

Heading inside, one entrance leads to the men’s universe, which connects to a central open space where the leather goods, jewellery and watches, and equestrian collections are displayed. The second entrance reveals the women’s universe and women’s silk, which are situated alongside perfume and fashion jewellery.

The ground floor also houses two fitting rooms and a dedicated private salon. Upstairs, another private area leads to a rooftop garden planted with trees – a nod to the original rooftop garden on faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris.

Hermès currently boasts some 40 doors across Japan, with 20 of those in Tokyo alone.

In its most recently trading update, Hermès revenue grew 21 percent to EUR 13.4 billion in 2023, on the back of double-digit growth across all regions including Asia and Japan.

In  Japan, sales skyrocketed 26 percent with the Daimaru Sapporo store on Hokkaido island and the Takashimaya store in the centre of Kyoto inaugurated in October and November, after renovation and expansion.
