Don Don Donki is set to open a new physical store in Whampoa Garden on 17 August 2022. According to the company’s official announcement, the Japanese supermarket chain will open at 10am, featuring a vintage theme resembling a traditional Japanese shopping street from the 1920s to 1980s.
This will be the brand’s first outlet in the city to feature Wagyu beef skewers teppanyaki and a specialty store where customers can get tailored dishes for their takeaway bento boxes. The Whampoa Garden outlet of Donki will feature Sen Sen Sushi, Donki’s sushi restaurant brand, as well as Yasuda Seimai, the company’s onigiri specialty shop.
Currently, DON DON DONKI operates nine stores in Hong Kong, according to its website. Its parent company, Pan Pacific International Holdings, will continue to “pioneer new distribution strategies to drive its international competitiveness while rapidly expanding its Hong Kong storebase.” In addition to a wide range of unique and highly original items in its stores, the company plans to continue exploring the introduction of more Japanese agricultural, livestock, marine, and hard goods.
Don Don Donki Hong Kong had required its employees to sign a new contract where some employees will receive a reduced salary. The Hong Kong Department Stores and Commercial Staff General Union said it would terminate employees who refused to sign the new contract. The union issued a report detailing disappointment and regret that workers had a pay cut despite the company’s profits last year.
