Tom Wood opens first international store in Japan

Norwegian luxury jewellery brand Tom Wood has opened its very first overseas store, opting for the Japanese capital of Tokyo to make its international retail debut.

Located in the city’s Aoyama district, the new Tom Wood store spans 320 square metres across two floors and blends innovation with sustainable practices; celebrating the brand’s Nordic heritage while exploring the appreciation for Japanese culture.

Designed in collaboration with Swedish design agency, the ground floor is created with recycled materials including aluminium, steel and upcycled end-of-life textiles, designed to be reused and being fully circular.

Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls divide the space displaying a selection of jewellery. A nine-metre long wooden cashier desk with integrated jewellery cabinets stands in front of tall archive walls that functions as storage and displays.

“This store represents the intersection of our brand, our products and people,” said Morten Isachsen, CEO of Tom Wood.

“We strive to make conscious choices in terms of materials, function and quality, but most of all to build retail stores that will be considered a time stamp that will be just as relevant in 10 or 15 years from now.”

The second floor boasts a a private gallery and apartment, where art and design curated by Tom Wood’s creative director and founder, Mona Jensen, is displayed.

“The idea was to brung parts of Norway to Japan, and to share my passion for great craftsmanship and design by curating the space as if it was my own home,” said Jensen.

The space is closed on a regular basis, but will occasionally be open for private appointments, events, talks and tours led by Tom Wood employees.

Marking the retail opening, Tom Wood Aoyama will also stock a limited-edition of the its classic Mined Ring, “inspired by our appreciation for the Land of the Rising Sun,” said the brand.

The Scandinavian brand has also designed a mini tote bag with is exclusive to its Tokyo flagship store, and will come free with every purchase until stocks run out.

The Tokyo store is the second boutique globally for the Tom Wood brand, after its flagship store opening in Oslo.

According to a recent report by American market research consultancy, Spherical Insights, Japan’s jewellery market size was valued at USD 9.62 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach USD 28.25 billion by 2032.
