Ten-year ban on beef imports to Australia lifted

Australia’s strict quarantine standards for beef and other produce must not be an excuse for protectionism, Agriculture Minister Tony Burke says.

Australia last week lifted its 10-year ban on beef imports from countries that have experienced mad-cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE). The country’s opposition party have raised concerns about the health and economic ramifications of the move.
