Hong Kong: Smartphones help push up profit at Hutchison telecoms arm

Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong, a mobile and fixed-line services provider, expects higher demand for data services, driven by a boom in smartphone usage, after net profit surged 103 percent to HKD468 million (USD60.3 million) last year.

The company said on Tuesday the rise was mainly due to improved turnover, which grew 4 percent to HKD8.45 billion (USD1.09 billion) from HKD8.12 billion (USD1.05 billion) in 2008. A fall in depreciation, amortisation and interest costs also contributed to the profit rise.
