A shootout between police and masked robbers in an upscale mall in Manila’s financial district Sunday left one suspect dead and sent shoppers scampering for safety, witnesses said.
The attempted noon heist at a luxury watch store in the trendy Greenbelt 5 mall in suburban Makati City will renew public concern about rampant criminality in the Southeast Asian country.
About seven masked gunmen barged into the store, said Freddie Tinga, mayor of nearby Taguig city, who was having lunch at a nearby restaurant. A gunfight broke out between the robbers and two police bodyguards with Tinga.
