Renesas to axe 5,000 jobs, 8 plants

Japan’s Renesas Electronics Corp. said on Tuesday it will close or sell eight of its 18 domestic plants and solicit early retirement applications from more than 5,000 employees in September as part of its restructuring.

The targeted plants include facilities in Fukui Prefecture, Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, and the city of Yamaguchi. Renesas is considering selling two additional plants in the future.

The struggling chipmaker already completed the sale of its plant in Goshogawara, Aomori Prefecture, to Fuji Electric Co.
