Kris Van Assche debuts first childrenswear collection with Balabala

Kris Van Assche, former Creative Director of Dior Homme and Berluti at the LVMH Group, collaborates for the first time with childrenswear brand Balabala on a special capsule collection which marks the brand’s 20th anniversary.

Known as the No.1 kids brand in China with existing store footprint of over 4,500 Balabala stores internationally, Balabala has recently launched a premium concept for the collection.

The idea of creating a children’s wear collection came as a bit of a surprise to Kris, “It is a completely new experience, where I have to address my work to girls and boys aged 3 to 14, and the experience has been fascinating, challenging, and fun.”

Balabala by Kris Van Assche takes its inspiration from the designer’s former collections, reinterpreting colorful dots and houndstooth to create a unique children’s collection.

Taking inspiration from the ’90s party scene, Van Assche transforms the use of polka dots into a playful, fresh motif for children, while classic tailoring fabric graphic – houndstooth, represents the concept of a comic superhero. Featuring both girls’ and boys’ styles, this collection combines high street-wear design with classic tailoring.

In Greater China, the collection is available in 20 premium shops and two flagship stores, as well as online by T Mall with a jointed look and T-Mall cat head for double 11.

“A huge advantage for me as a designer is the fact that Balabala has such a wide reach, as I know Balabala reaches 20 million Chinese families and that’s really exciting for me as a designer to reach so many young people,” Van Assche adds. “Basically, Balabala dresses children from 0 to 14, so that will be my future adult clientele and it’s fantastic to be able to connect with them.”
