While Woolworths remains the biggest player in deli sales, which are worth AUD4.7 billion (USD3.47b) annually, it has been losing ground to rival Coles.
A Roy Morgan report released this month estimated Woolworths’ share of total deli sales fell slightly from 44.1 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2015. Meanwhile, Coles’ claim surged from 31.5 percent of the market to 36.7 percent over the same period.
Retail analysts consider deli sales to be a vital battleground for the two supermarket giants as they drive greater sales across whole stores while being immune to competition from discount players like Aldi, which does not have a deli counter.
