Late-night liquor plan at Australia’s Woolworths raises fears

Woolworths wants to open a late-night liquor store in a part of Sydney that is under a liquor licence freeze due to concerns over alcohol-related violence.

Australia’s largest retailer has lodged a development application with the City of Sydney council to operate a liquor store that may be open from 9am until midnight, seven days a week, at its Town Hall supermarket.

The director of the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn, feared a new liquor store in the area would increase alcohol-related violence.
