Rakuten launches new membership program for young shoppers

Rakuten Inc. recently launched Rakuten Young, a new membership program aimed at young people in Japan.

The program provides an opportunity for young people to experience the Rakuten Ecosystem. It is an extension of the Rakuten Membership ID, designed exclusively for young adults, aged 18 to 24, and students of all ages in higher education.

Rakuten Young offers a free three-month trial, after which members can enjoy the benefits of the program for an annual fee of only JPY1,780 yen (tax included) (USD14.7).

Some of the benefits available to members include free shipping coupons that can be used at Rakuten Ichiba stores participating in the program, earning 2 Rakuten Super Points for every JPY100 (USD0.83) spent on reservations and use of hotels and highway buses within Japan booked through Rakuten Travel, earning 10 Rakuten Super Points for every JPY100 spent on purchases of books, manga, magazines, CDs, DVDs, games, software and other products on Rakuten Books for their first year of full membership.

Members will also receive a JPY500 (USD4.1) discount coupon at Rakuten Kobo and earn 10 Rakuten Supoer Points for every JPY100 (USD0.83) spent on eBooks purchases.

Through the membership program, Rakuten hopes to increase its touch points with customers and support the needs of its young members.
