Truck freight rates keep fruit and veg price high in India

A major reason why the retail price of India’s fruit and vegetables have not shown an appreciable decline – despite good harvests – is that truck freight rates, which constitute a major portion of the final price, have risen from 20 to 25 percent in the last five to six months.

This is reinforced by the continued upward swing in truck rentals in the next few months, as well a rise in the volume of orders and a lack of availability of new fleets on the road, according to a report by the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training.
