Indian exports of handicrafts saw an increase of 6.55 percent to INR8,718.94 crore (INR87.19 billion, USD1.96 billion) during 2009-10, up INR538.28 crore (INR5.4 billion, USD121.06 million) as against INR8,183 crore (INR81 billion, USD1.8 billion) in 2008-09.
According to the chairman of the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts Raj Kumar Malhotra, handicrafts figures in the past have shown consistent growth in exports up until 2006-07. On average, exports increased by 10 percent per annum till 2006-07.
However, due to the recession in the global market, exports of handicrafts had fallen considerably until 2009-10 when the government gave support to India’s exporters.
