Chinese multinational Sinopec admits employee took bribes from Daimler

Refining giant China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. on 27 March acknowledged its links to a multination US investigation into improper payments made by Daimler AG, issuing a statement urging Beijing to crack down on unscrupulous behaviour by multinational companies.

The Beijing-based company, known as Sinopec, said that following an internal investigation launched in 2004, it discovered that a former employee had taken unspecified bribes from Daimler. Sinopec said it later handed its findings, which involved unspecified bribes that took place between 2002 and 2003, to Beijing prosecutors, who charged, convicted and jailed the man in question in 2006.
