Japanese regular base wage grows for 1st time in 4 years

The regular monthly base wage for workers in March rose 0.7 percent from a year earlier to an average of JPY244,778 (USD3053), the first gain in three years and 11 months, the Japanese government said on Wednesday.

The rebound is attributable to a fall in base pay in March last year mainly for part-time workers in the wake of the powerful earthquake and tsunami, Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry officials said.

The overall monthly wage, including bonuses and other irregular pay, extended gains for the second month to JPY278,333, up 1.3 percent, while overtime compensation and other nonbase pay rose 4.4 percent to JPY19,472 for the sixth straight month of gain.
