HK job market remains cautious in 2012, says Robert Walters

With sales in the retail sector jumping 24.1 percent in September from a year earlier, sales and marketing professionals in the retail and luxury sector in Hong Kong were highly sought-after in 2011, a survey by Robert Walters finds.

The annual global Salary Survey by the international recruitment consultancy also says that that Hong Kong experienced active hiring in the first half of 2011 across most industries. However more caution was exercised during the second half as a result of European and US economic volatility.

The report points out that in 2012 many companies in Hong Kong are expected to adopt the same cautious approach to hiring as seen in the second half of 2011 as they continue to monitor the global economic climate.  Experienced professionals will continue to be in demand across all sectors, but organisations will be more selective in their hiring to ensure they bring on the right talent who can add value to the company – even more so this year in light of global economic uncertainty.

The report suggests that contracting may be an option for both employers experiencing challenges in gaining headcount this year; and for candidates who are open to the prospect of working on a variety of exciting new projects.
