Wal-Mart to help BP clean up spill

Officials from BP and Wal-Mart Stores are to study using the retail giant’s technology to help clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, retired US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said.

Allen, who is overseeing the US response to the massive spill, said Wal-Mart’s know-how could be used to help track the private boats – called vessels of opportunity – involved in skimming and cleaning up oil in the Gulf. "What we’re trying to do is get a command and control system for all those skimming vessels that are out there," he said. "We’re looking to see if the technology that Wal-Mart uses to track its trailers and trucks might be used to help track skimmers and the vessels of opportunity."
