HK shoppers most generous on Mother’s Day gift spending in Asia-Pacific, says Groupon

Hong Kong shoppers plan to spend HKD1,056 on their Mother’s Day gift, which is the most among eight markets in Asia-Pacific, according to a new survey of Groupon Hong Kong. Shoppers in the other seven markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, and New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan, plan to spend less than HKD1,000 on Mother’s Day, Groupon said on Monday.

The online daily deals provider did an online survey of its subscribers to better understand consumers’ Mother’s Day shopping plans and mothers’ preferences in the region. Data from the survey revealed that 51 percent of the 4,933 respondents think that mothers would like to receive an overseas holiday if money was no object. Eighty-five percent of gifts givers in Hong Kong try to give mothers something different each year, however, 41 percent of the respondents plan to purchase classic "tried & tested" gifts – a meal out.

As for mothers, 60 percent of the mothers in Hong Kong want the gifts or activities to be a total surprise and most mothers want a gift they can do with their family and to make her feel good. If the gift is disappointing, 6 in 10 mother respondents would accept the gift without letting their disappointment show.
