Taobao, Yahoo Japan in talks on online cross-border trade tie-up

Taobao, China’s leading internet shopping portal, and Softbank Corp-controlled Yahoo Japan are closing in on a deal that could drive cross-border trade between Chinese and Japanese online merchants.

Privately held Taobao, which had more than 170 million registered users in December 2009, was estimated to have hosted more than two million online stores as of June last year. Tokyo-listed Yahoo Japan, in which Softbank has a 40.95 percent stake, counted 17,277 online shopping outlets and 16,833 internet auction stores as of February.

Taobao’s alliance with Yahoo Japan would certainly pose a strong challenge to Chinese internet search giant Baidu’s joint venture with Rakuten, the biggest online shopping mall operator in Japan.
