Blu-ray disc player sales in Taiwan expected to surpass 100,000 units in 2011

Blu-ray disc player sales in Taiwan may surpass 100,000 units in 2011 as players such as Toshiba, Sony, LG, Panasonic and Sharp all launched models with prices less than USD100 in the first quarter and their strategies are expected to turn Blu-ray disc player’s market status from niche to fierce competition, according to sources from Blu-ray disc player vendors.

Affected by online video and cloud computing, Taiwan’s multimedia players’ sales in 2010 were lower than those in 2008 and 2009 and only reached 630,000 units, of which, the sales volume of Blu-ray disc players was only about 30,000 units, accounting for less than 5 percent of the total volume due to high prices.
