Australia’s retail group pushes ABS over online sales

A group of prominent retailers has urged the Australian Bureau of Statistics to give more detail on the surging ”other” retail sales category to shed light on how quickly online sales have expanded.

The ABS breaks down retailing into a range of categories including food retailing, household goods and clothing, but it does not have a category specifically for online sales within those existing groups.

"Online retailing is in the ‘other’ retailing area, so you don’t know what percentage of that ‘other’ retailing is the online," said Australian Retailers Association executive director Russell Zimmerman.
