Apple’s App Store tops 25b downloads

More than 25 billion apps have been downloaded from Apple’s App Store, the company has announced, in a milestone that highlights the shift to a new model for computing, digital content, software and the web.

Apple kick-started the revolution just four years ago when it made available a toolkit for third-party developers to build apps for its iPhone on 6 March 2008.

The kit was downloaded more than 100,000 times in the first four days and there were 800 apps available when the App Store opened its online doors in July that year. Today, there are more than 550,000 apps created by 248,000 developers for the 315 million iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices sold.
