Alibaba IPP restriction to fight against IPP restrictions - Retail in Asia

In its latest efforts to promote brand safety and protection on its platforms, ecommerce giant Alibaba today unveiled enhancements to its intellectual property (IP) protection platform.

The move comes three days after French luxury goods company Kering dropped its lawsuit against Alibaba for carrying counterfeit goods and established a joint task force with the Chinese company.

The new enhancements include, amongst others, multi-lingual trademark-recognition, improved search engine optimisation and a dedicated team to respond to inbound inquiries.

Alibaba claims in the first month after the new enhancements were made to the platform, 96% of complaints about counterfeit goods received were handled and closed within 24 hours, while 83% of the listings were also taken down.

Jessie Zheng, Alibaba’s chief platform governance officer, said: “Brand trust is core to our mission. Our enhanced platform, along with significant progress in other important initiatives all showcase the industry best practices Alibaba is creating for the benefit of all our stakeholders.”
