Microsoft unveils Office 2010 in India

Microsoft Corporation India Pvt. Ltd on 13 May announced the availability of Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010 for business customers in India and across the world. More than 90 million existing business customers worldwide can start taking advantage of the latest office productivity suite from Microsoft that delivers a unified productivity experience across PC, web and mobile platforms.

"When we set out to reinvent the world’s favourite productivity suite, we discovered that seamless collaboration and anywhere, anytime access to documents are crucial enablers of the next generation of productivity gains. The latest wave of Office 2010 and related products delivers exactly that, along with a host of several other features and enhancements that allow businesses to save, innovate and grow," says Ravi Venkatesan, chairman of Microsoft India.

According to Forrester Research, companies deploying Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Exchange 2010 and Office Communications Server 2007 R2 can expect more than a 300 percent return on investment in less than a year; see more than USD13 million in savings over a three year period; and accumulate an average savings of more than two working weeks per year.

The beta version saw over 1.3 million downloads and over 2,000 businesses are already making the transition to the latest version, including TCS, Cognizant Technologies, Lowe Lintas, Virgin Mobile, Mindtree Consulting, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro and HCL Infosystems.

Microsoft also announced that Office Mobile 2010 will soon be available on Windows 6.5 phones and a broad range of Nokia smart phones starting with Nokia’s business-optimised range, the E-series. Managing director and vice president at Nokia India D Shivakumar says, "If you are going to provide a seamless and integrated productivity experience on a mobile device, we believe Microsoft is an ideal partner. With the mobile device fast emerging as the primary access device for professionals on the move, this alliance will enable us to expand Microsoft Office Mobile to Nokia smart phone users and allow them to collaborate on Office documents from anywhere. Both Microsoft and Nokia possess a rare combination of enterprise experience and consumer understanding, and together we are working on a new and innovative user experience."

Microsoft’s signature productivity technologies are now also available in the cloud, offering additional choice and flexibility for IT departments. As from 13 May, Office Web applications – a companion set of Office functionalities on the cloud – will be available to all Office volume licensing customers. In addition, customers will be able to purchase a subscription to Office Web Apps as part of Microsoft Online Services, Microsoft’s cloud-based applications.

With over 40 million paying customers on Microsoft Online Services, businesses are embracing Microsoft’s vision for the cloud. This is part of Microsoft’s continued focus on delivering cloud services for enterprise users. Earlier this year, Microsoft had announced the availability of its platform on the cloud, Windows Azure, which has already generated much interest in the Indian Market.

Developer and partner opportunities

Office 2010 allows developers to respond more easily to business needs. Both Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 beta programmes had three times the number of participants over previous ones. Globally, over 8.6 million people are already using Office 2010 and related products. In addition, more than 1,000 partners are already building solutions for the 2010 set of products. In India, over 230 partners and 9,000 IT professionals have been trained across eight cities.

SharePoint 2010 delivers a business collaboration platform for the enterprise and internet, enabling developers to respond to business needs with customised applications. Customers can now reduce development costs and deliver solutions that are more adaptable to business changes with the full power of .NET and Visual Studio 2010 tools. In fact, the SharePoint integration services opportunity for Microsoft partners and developers is USD5.6 billion, and is expected to grow to USD6.7 billion in 2011.

Microsoft has simplified the stock-keeping unit (SKUs) line up – designed to make it easier for users to buy products that best meet there needs. Office 2010 is available for volume licensing in two editions: Office 2010 Standard and Office 2010 Professional Plus, for  small and medium-sized businesses and enterprise customers respectively.

Office 2010 Professional, Office 2010 Home and Business address the needs of small businesses, and Office Home and Student caters for home users. These SKUs will be retailed from mid-June.
