US’s 3M plans drive for India-specific items

Post-it and Scotch-Brite are groundbreaking innovations, but the US’s 3M Company, with its mindboggling range of 55,000 products, wants to be known beyond its 2 iconic products and move its innovation capability beyond the US.

"Not many people know that unlike other [multinationals] we have specific R&D centres for each country. We have 37 such labs developing products," says Ashish Khandpur, technical director, 3M India. The company is moving towards an indigenisation culture where each region develops and manufactures products to suit its customer segment.

3M plans to spend close to INR100 crore (INR1 billion, USD21.6 million) on R&D in India over the next three years. This will include the setting up of a new Bangalore laboratory to work on innovative technology platforms such as non-wovens, processing and advanced analytics. All the products under development will be for use in the Indian market, adds Khandpur.
