iPhone 14 offers a range of safety features that can provide assistance in an emergency. Emergency SOS via satellite is a new feature introduced with the iPhone 14 lineup. It combines custom components to enable antennas to connect directly to a satellite, enabling emergency services to receive messages when outside cellular coverage and Wi-Fi.

The transmission of messages via satellite can take minutes since satellites are moving targets with limited bandwidth. In order to save time, the iPhone uses Emergency SOS via satellite to ask a few essential questions in order to assess the user’s situation and to show them where to point their phone in order to connect to a satellite.

By combining different capabilities, the barometer is now able to detect cabin pressure changes, the GPS can display additional speed information, and the microphone can recognize loud noises from severe car crashes. Over a million hours of real-world driving and crash record data are used to train Apple’s motion algorithms for even better accuracy. The Crash Detection interface seamlessly integrates with Apple Watch to get users help as quickly as possible.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus retain much of the iPhone 13’s design – including the previous-generation A15 Bionic chipset, but the Mini option isn’t available this year. On September 9th, preorders will begin; the standard 14 will ship on September 16th, and the 14 Plus will arrive on October 7th.
