Taking Stock: Taiwan news organization embraces e-commerce

Taiwan’s United Daily News is taking the road less travelled by news organizations. After 60 years of leading in the country’s media industry, it has expanded its business to online shopping.

Its comprehensive commerce platform, UDN Shopping, showcases more than 300,000 items in its online store.

Setting its sights on becoming a leading e-commerce platform provider throughout the greater China region, UDN knows that to support its business objectives it needs a high-performing commercial application that would provide high service quality and vendor support.

The company deployed the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform—with built-in session replication function—to provide extremely high performance and high availability cost effectively.

Now there are more than 40,000 daily unique visitors, with page views of nearly 300,000, and more than 80,000 transactions per day — compared to only hundreds of users and thousands of transactions with the previous solution. UDN Shopping has been able to achieve a 70-80 percent cost reduction.
