Japan’s furniture makers look to coddle China’s rich

Makers of high-end furniture in and around the Japanese city of Asahikawa in central Hokkaido are planning to expand their sales to rich Chinese, at a time when Japan’s furniture industry is losing ground to mass-produced cheap products from China.

Members of the Asahikawa Furniture Industrial Cooperative Society are pushing to charge into China to offset the surge of cheap Chinese products. Several members of the society plan to exhibit their products at an upcoming international furniture fair in China.
