Thailand’s mobile phone market grows at rapid clip

Defying both the lagging economy and the consumer slowdown, Thailand’s handset market continues its double-digit growth this year thanks to a spike in smartphone sales.

Smartphones continue to drive the vibrant performance of the mobile phone market, propelling the country’s overall handset industry to expand by at least 10 percent to 16.5 million units.

Sales of smartphones in Thailand are expected to grow by 37 percent to 7.8 million units in a market valued at THB54 billion (USD1.72) in 2013, fuelled by declining prices and increasing demand for migration to 3G mobile broadband services from 2G, according to the research firm GfK Retail and Technology (Thailand).
