China ignites Audi sales surge

German automaker Audi AG said on Thursday that March global sales soared 22 percent from the year earlier, fuelled by strong demand for its A5, Q5 and A4 models, notably in China.

The strong results come as Audi is working to boost Chinese and US sales as it looks to overtake rivals BMW AG and Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz brand to become the world’s biggest annual seller of premium cars. Last year, BMW led annual sales, followed by Mercedes and Audi.

Audi, a unit of Volkswagen AG, is ahead of both its rivals in China, and thinks sales in China could overtake its sales in Germany this year. But it lags behind in the US, a major market for both BMW and Mercedes. Both its rivals are also expecting demand in China and the US to drive the industry’s recovery after a gloomy 2009.
