Competition in Australia’s AUD4 billion (USD2.92b) cosmetics and beauty sector has never been fiercer, with international beauty giant Sephora opening its second flagship store in Melbourne in late November, following the launch of its Australian online store in the same month.
It’s a high-margin business and a lucrative segment for the major department stores, which have both moved into beauty services in a bid to expand their offering and protect their claim on the high-profile beauty and cosmetic brands.
This year Mecca founder Jo Horgan will cut the ribbon on 20 new stores as she accelerates the expansion for her cosmetics empire through its three retail brands. The network of Mecca Cosmetica, Mecca Maxima and the Mecca instore boutiques in Myer will all expand over 2016 as Ms Horgan increases the store network as well as the size of her beauty boutiques.
