Japan’s Asahi in talks with SABMiller’s Peroni and Grolsch

Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings said it is in exclusive discussion to purchase SABMiller’s Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime beer brands for 2.55 billion euros (USD 2.9 billion), as it wishes to counterbalance its slow development in its home market.

The sale is being organized by Anheuser-Busch InBev, which is attempting to secure antitrust acceptance for its $100 billion-plus takeover of SABMiller, concurred a year ago.

With 38 percent of Japan’s market, Asahi is the greatest brewer of its home market, where a contracting population and the expanding fame of wine have weighed on beer deals for more than two decades.

With Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime, the group would expand itself with sizeable positions in the premium beer markets of Italy, Britain and the Netherlands, and open new doors for the distribution of its Asahi Super Dry.
