Consumer regulator unsure about Asahi’s move on P&N

Asahi Breweries may have a tough time convincing the consumer regulator to allow it to buy P&N Beverages Australia, analysts said.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has been strict about deals that could negatively impact consumers and the P&N deal has the potential to create a highly consolidated domestic drinks market in certain categories.

Integrating Australia’s number two and three drinks’ makers will produce an entity with 29 percent of domestic market share, bringing it closer to industry leader Coca-Cola Amatil’s 44 percent, Asahi said.
