Malaysian WhatsApp users are the first to be granted access to the feature, with no date for the eventual global rollout of “Communities” having been announced.

Other benefits presented by the new feature include WhatsApp administrators being able to control which groups will be allowed to join a community, as well as creating smaller groups within it.

“Community admins can also send announcements to all members through an announcement Group. Additionally, only admins can add members to a Community or send an invite link, and will have the ability to remove members where needed” WhatsApp representatives announced in a press release.

Admins can also delete messages of group members, share files up to 2GB in size, and hold larger voice calls with up to 32 participants on the messaging service.

The company has also maintained its policy for encrypted messages and security for its users. All messages in Communities are encrypted end-to-end, just like those in one-to-one and group chats.

The initial release of the feature is limited to some Malaysian users due to an ongoing roll out. WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, added that the feature will be gradually rolled out over the coming weeks.
