Indian government bats for single retail policy

Around 30 top retailers, including Future, Walmart, Trent and Godrej Nature’s Basket, were given a firm assurance by the government that their concerns pertaining to the prevailing retail environment, which impacted their businesses, would be addressed on a priority basis.

The assurance was given by Amitabh Kant, secretary, department of industrial policy & promotion (DIPP), in a closed-door meeting organised at the sidelines of the ongoing India Retail Forum here on Wednesday.

In the meeting, Kant emphasised the need for a single retail policy to weed out what retailers termed an "inordinate attention to a single channel of distribution, notably, e-commerce". "There should be no discrimination between single brand, multi-brand or e-commerce companies; instead, there should be a single retail policy. These are legacy issues from the past, which we understand and recognise. All of you should also push for it," Kant said while addressing the chief executives (CEOs) over a video link from his New Delhi office.
