With the retail industry in India starting to look up again, franchising business is expected to grow by 35 percent in the next fiscal year. In 2009, about 80 new brands – including Pollo-Campero, Lolita, Santa Barbara Polo and Zara – entered India through the franchise model.
There are almost 12 million kirana (neighbourhood) shops or "mom-and-pop stores" in India, with organised retail having a penetration level of 5-8 percent.
