India: From cows to consumers, without middlemen

There was a time when milk cooperatives were the number one milk producer in India. Things have changed since the 1990s, with the private sector playing an increasingly important role in the dairy industry. Today, milk production in the whole of India stands at around 104 million tonnes. Cooperatives provide 8.5 million tonnes and the private sector, 11 million tonnes. The remaining supply comes from fragmented sources.
