Growth, inflation risks equal, says S Korea chief

South Korea’s central bank chief said the local economy was facing equal risks from low growth and high inflation expectations, backing the market’s view that interest rates will be held steady for an extended period.

"It would be courageous but not wise if I say definitely (whether the economy is in good shape or bad)," Bank of Korea Governor Kim Choong-soo told reporters late on Thursday on the sidelines of the Asian Development Bank’s annual meeting.

"We see mixed signals," he said, referring to recent indicators that showed growth accelerated in the first quarter from the previous quarter whereas industrial production fell sharply in March from February.
