Japan retailers benefit from hot July

Japanese retailers enjoyed brisk sales in July, with demand for cold drinks, summer clothes and other seasonal goods boosted by scorching heat late in the month, industry data have shown.

Same-store sales at supermarkets rose 1.9 percent from a year earlier, up for the fourth straight month, the Japan Chain Stores Association said Friday. All-store sales grew 2.5 percent to JPY1.12 trillion (USD9.25 billion).

Supermarkets saw sales of summer clothes, hats, parasols and swim tubes surge as a heat wave hit the country after the end of the rainy season. Prepared food sales were also solid, apparently because many people were reluctant to cook at home due to the hot weather.
