UNDEFEATED debuts new store in Shanghai

As UNDEFEATED celebrates its 20th anniversary, the brand has opened its first direct-operated store in Mainland China. Since opening its first store in Hong Kong’s luxury-label-filled Lee Garden back in 2018, the iconic sneaker boutique has expanded to Shanghai. The Shanghai Xingye Taikoo Hui Store is the brand’s largest offline physical store so far.

To celebrate the opening of Shanghai Xingye Taikoo Hui, UNDEFEATED has launched a Shanghai limited capsule collection inspired by the three major landmarks of the city – Shikumen, Sihang Warehouse and Lujiazui.

The UNDEFEATED Shanghai store, located in the bustling Jing’an District, was designed by renowned Japanese designer Masato Kure. The store’s main design cues were inspired by sports, music, and art, echoing  other UNDEFEATED Chapter stores across the US and Japan.

To integrate Eastern and Western cultures, UNDEFEATED Shanghai Xingye Taikoo Hui Store utilizes raw materials and textures inspired by California modern architecture. With the grainy black wall infused with military and sports elements, the store’s facade follows the iconic classic aesthetics of UNDEFEATED, displayed in a rough and clean design language.

As part of the store’s design, there is a miniature “dry garden” often seen in Japanese courtyards and wooden decorations to give it a “zen feel”. There is also a display table made of discarded backboards and a bench inspired by a gym bench press. The top round headlights and shoe walls that are made of wooden grilles originate from NBA arena locker rooms. Additionally, behind the cashier, customers can see a specially designed artwork created by Los Angeles artist Geoff McFetridge.
