Agency data on China energy use unreliable, says official

Chinese officials on Tuesday rejected an assessment from the International Energy Agency (IEA) that it had surpassed the US to become the world’s top energy consumer.

The IEA has stated that China used 2.252 billion tonnes of oil-equivalent energy in 2009, 4 percent higher than the energy usage of the United States. However, government official Zhou Xian has spoken out against this claim, stating, "The IEA’s data on China’s energy use is unreliable."
