Located at No. 30 Lane 319, Jiaozhou Lu, the new Freitag Shanghai store spans two floors inside an 80s industrial building. A cumulation of work from local architects, landscape gardeners, engineers, designers and an on-site team, the store serves as an innovative building concept that promotes sustainability, and generates minimal CO₂ emissions, among other things.

As a result, the industrial-style store, created by interior designers Kooo Architects, reuses discarded materials in its store design: think rubble from building sites has been turned into walls, and hoarding panels have been transformed into a characteristic façade.

The ground floor is home to both a repair shop and a workshop space. Here, shoppers can experience the brand’s digital F-Cut customization tool, using a remote control to place a pattern for a full-size bag model on a tarp projection, design their own bag from used truck tarps.

Upstairs, visitors will find the full range of Zurich-based Freitag bags, pouches and accessories. Here, seating objects have been created in collaboration with designer Leandro Destefani.

Finally, the store’s rooftop features an organic community garden with local plants.

Founded in Switzerland in 1993 by graphic designers Markus and Daniel Freitag, Freitag today boasts close to 100 stores in Asia alone including 37 in Japan, 26 in China, 15 in Thailand, 10 in South Korea, three in Hong Kong, two in Indonesia, six in Malaysia, seven in Singapore, and five in Taiwan.
