Australia’s Optus hires new staff – after axing 750 jobs

One week after completing its latest round of lay-offs, Australia’s second biggest telco Optus said on Tuesday it will hire 200 people to staff new retail stores.

In an effort to bring the company’s digital sales in line with its traditional store offerings, the company will open 33 more "Yes" Optus stores, requiring 200 more people, Optus said. Optus currently operates 290 stores nationwide.

Last week, Optus completed the retrenchment of 750 management, back office and support functions first flagged in May, as the company looked to increase efficiencies in response to the "increasingly competitive trading environment".
