Retail Asia Expo highlights: RiiT gets “smart”

New applications of technology are on show in full force at the Retail Asia Expo 2010, running at Hong Kong’s Convention and Exhibition Centre until tomorrow. Indeed, technology is one of the main themes of the expo this year. Among the fascinating technologies on display is Hong Kong-based Megasoft Ltd’s retail-management system "RiiT", or "Retail intelligence innovative Technology".

With RiiT, Megasoft has pioneered the "smart mirror", a fitting-room mirror with an interactive display that suggests outfit ideas to customers trying on specific garments. Hold a yellow vest, for example, up to the mirror, and an LCD panel instantly displays a model wearing the vest, before flipping through a number of bottoms and accessories options for the customer to consider.

The "smart fitting room" itself is equipped with a touch-screen panel giving the customer instant information on a garment’s features (fabric, label and designer), promotional information, and sizes available in the store as well as other stores. No more waiting to phone another store to see if they carry your size! The system also includes a security monitor that keeps track of the number of garments going in and out.

RiiT is certainly one retail system to be excited about – and one Retail in Asia will be keeping a close eye on.
