Are you being served, asks Dell

"Optimising the price of a laptop is not enough anymore", just about captured the essence of Dell’s philosophy behind its services offering and its transformation into a hardware- cum-solutions provider. Stating this at a presentation to analysts and journalists late last month, Steve Schuckenbrock, president of Dell – Large Enterprises, unveiled several new offerings and initiatives.

Dell’s Large Enterprises division plans to leverage the strengths of the services business, recently bolstered by the acquisition of Perot Systems, to offer solutions to a spectrum of customers, "from a single server customer to a hyper-scale cloud computing customer."

Schuckenbrock made a point about the need to cut costs. "CIOs are caught in a torque, needing to do more but with less. Their boards are now asking them why they need to spend so much money to just run the place." (Now here’s the man to say it – he was the CIO for Dell in an earlier avatar and CIO of PepsiCo for two years till 2000.)
