Fashion labels ranked for transparency of standards in global index

Luxury brands Chanel, Hermes and Prada are among the least transparent when it comes to reporting their social and environmental standards, according to a new index ranking the world’s biggest fashion labels.

The Fashion Transparency Index, a joint project between UK not-for-profit Fashion Revolution and research co-operative Ethical Consumer, includes brands from sectors including sportswear, luxury and the high street. All have an annual turnover of at least GBP36 million (USD51.7m).

Levi Strauss & Co, Inditex (Zara) and H&M came out on top in the index, for making “significant efforts in given areas and making some or most of their information publicly available,” according to Melinda Tually, Australia and New Zealand coordinator for Fashion Revolution.

Luxury fashion houses Chanel, Hermes and Prada were among the lowest rating brands, found to be “making little effort towards being transparent about their supply chain practices…with little to no evidence that the company has more than a Code of Conduct in place”.
