New Delhi’s wealthy residents continue to spend on luxury

Despite India’s economic slowdown and growing inflation, affluent Delhi residents do not seem to stop splurging on entertainment and luxury, according to the latest Delhi government data.

The trend of spending could be attributed to around 16 percent increase in per capita income of the people in 2011-12 compared to the previous year.

A whopping five lakh new vehicles hit the city roads in 2011-12 while a total of 1.08 crore cases of Indian made foreign liquor were sold during the year as against 92 lakh cases in 2010-11. In another indication of rising spending on entertainment, around 98,000 people went to theatres daily in 2011-12 as against 90,000 people in the previous year.

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit said the figures reflect a vibrant economy and fast-improving infrastructure in Delhi.
